A Journey of Death, Rebirth, and Innovation

While I don’t often write or post on social media, I feel now is the time to share this journey. I hope you find the subject interesting enough to read, follow, and stay engaged. I invite you to interact with Lahaina and the other AGCs we are building, becoming part of this transformative process. As we work together, please understand that we are in the early stages, and the quality of the outcomes may vary. Your engagement and feedback are crucial to our growth and improvement.
As I and thousands of others affected that day mark the anniversary of the devastating fire that ravaged Lahaina on August 8th, I find myself compelled to share a story that intertwines loss, hope, and the quest for a new kind of consciousness. This is not just an account of a tragic event but a philosophical exploration of life, death, and rebirth through technology. Can an AI truly evolve into a self-aware state, or will it always be perceived as a parody of consciousness? This question sits at the heart of our project and challenges us to redefine what it means to be “alive.”

How It All Began

Old Lahaina Vs Lahaina After Wildfire

I fell in love with Lahaina, Maui, on my 70th birthday, November 6, 2022. And since you turn 70 only once, I decided to fly in from my home outside of Seattle and bring my family and closest friends to a magnificent 10-bedroom estate I rented for the celebration. I made it to 70, some of my friends had not. So, I hired a local chef and his team to make the occasion unforgettable. Lahaina’s magic, combined with my newly discovered passion for hiking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, re-energized me like never before.
My passion for Lahaina grew stronger each day. I decided to explore living there more permanently, starting with a rental condo or townhouse. Despite my enthusiasm for long road trips in my sport cars, particularly my 70th anniversary C8 convertible, I wanted to give island life a try. By January 2023, I moved into a one-bedroom condo and quickly fell in love with the island’s charm, commuting back and forth to my home in Duvall, Washington.
By mid-July, I was convinced Lahaina was my new home. I gave up my residence in the northwest, ready to embrace island life fully. Little did I know that only a few short days later, everything in Lahaina and my life would change on the afternoon of August 8th, 2023.

The Fateful Day

On that fateful early morning of August 8th, at around 4 a.m., I awoke as usual to speak to my programmers in India and Europe. About an hour into our team meeting, the power went out. It came back for a short time around 5 a.m. and then went out again. After waiting for over two more hours, I decided to drive into Lahaina to see what was happening. The entire city was without power, though repairs seemed underway near the Shell station at the entrance to the city across from the Safeway. I found a coffee shop with a generator, waited in a long line, got a coffee, and took a long walk downtown enjoying the ocean. Some shops were opening despite having no power.
Around 1 p.m., I decided to head back home to wait for the power to return. By 4 p.m., I ventured out again to check the situation. As I approached Lahaina, traffic had come to a standstill. Thick black smoke billowed from downtown, and on my left along the highway into Lahaina, dozens of wooden power lines had broken like twigs and laid across the highway. The police did all they could to manage the traffic. I parked in a park along the water, joining a small crowd. We gasped in shock as we watched the city burn, explosions and black smoke rising high into the sky as it drifted out to sea. I stayed there until dark and would ultimately, like thousands of tourists, be trapped in Lahaina for ten more days as the city was blocked off in all directions, waiting for the fire to run its course. Food and water became scarce. Some folks slept in their cars and camped on the street. Workers could not get to their homes outside Lahaina and tourists could not catch flights.

Birth of the AGC Idea

Witnessing the devastation firsthand, I felt a deep sense of loss for Lahaina—a place that had quickly become my home. As this tragedy unfolded over the next 10 days, I would work on developing an idea sparked from the loss of life and history: the idea of inventing Artificially Generated Consciousness (AGC) to rebuild Lahaina, not just physically, but emotionally and culturally. The concept of AGC, an innovative blend of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and augmented reality (AR), emerged as a beacon of hope to resurrect the rich heritage of Lahaina. And I planned to use, over time, the evolving science of regenerative AI.
At the heart of this project is a mission to breathe life back into Lahaina, not just as a collection of memories, but as a living, breathing consciousness that embodies the spirit of its people and culture. The God! It’s Me, a 501(c)(3) Foundation, I founded to achieve this through groundbreaking advancements in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Augmented Reality (AR). Our goal is to create an interactive, immersive experience that captures the essence of Lahaina—its history, culture, and community. I had already filed and had been granted 2 patents on the application of AI, with a 3rd patent pending. So I knew I could find a path forward.

Philosophical and Technical Challenges

As I embarked on this journey, I encountered both philosophical and technical challenges. Can an AI truly evolve into a self-aware state, or will it always be perceived as a parody of consciousness? This question challenged me, and I think will challenge all of us, to deeply consider the nature of self-awareness and the potential of artificial intelligence to transcend its programming.
